Hugh Grant
Hugh is a bonsai professional based in the picturesque upper Blue Mountains of New South Wales, where he operates Tree Makers Designs—a garden and studio dedicated to quality bonsai artistry and techniques. At Tree Makers, Hugh provides styling, maintenance, and professional development services for clients’ bonsai while also teaching study groups and delivering lectures at events across Australia and internationally.
Hugh's bonsai journey began at the remarkable age of 11, sparked by a television segment that ignited his fascination with the art form. Soon after, he acquired his first tree, embarking on what would become a lifelong passion.
From 2013 to 2016, Hugh pursued a Fine Arts degree at the University of Newcastle, where his understanding of bonsai evolved beyond a mere hobby into a lifestyle. This commitment deepened in 2016 when he undertook an internship with Ryan Neil, the internationally renowned bonsai professional at Bonsai Mirai in Oregon, USA. Through this invaluable experience, Hugh honed his craft and developed a unique approach to bonsai that emphasizes the distinct beauty of Australian natives, drawing inspiration from the natural world that has shaped his perspective.
Tree Makers garden and studio represents Hugh’s vision for a world-class facility that celebrates bonsai as an art form reflective of Australia’s landscapes, ecosystems, and cultural heritage. With this aspiration, Hugh seeks to elevate Australian bonsai onto the global stage, sharing the unique stories and beauty of his homeland through every tree he designs.
